My approach with individuals.

Psychotherapy is a process. And even after seeing many clients change and grow and move forward in their lives, I still have a hard time putting into words what exactly happens between my clients and me.

I will listen to you in a different way than the listening you get from a friend. I listen carefully for patterns and think deeply about your experience. I focus on building on the strengths you already have.

We collaborate on the direction, course and length of therapy. I give honest feedback, and teach new techniques for coping with hard emotions like anger, guilt, sadness, emptiness, and hopelessness.

My style is compassionate, warm and accepting. I work with clients as diverse as the city of Los Angeles. I am trained in culturally sensitive psychotherapy, and diversity in my clients is something I highly value.

On growing up.

I love this quote from blogger and feminist writer, Courtney Martin: “Growing up is about aiming to succeed wildly and being fulfilled by failing really well.”

Once we reach adult age, we are often disappointed by our relationships and our careers. We feel that we have “failed.” The process of facing and living life as it is and not as we hoped it would be is how we learn to be adults. Perfectionism can be a bigger problem than the so-called failure. In therapy, we get to know your inner critical voice and speak back to it with compassion.

What is mindfulness?

Being mindful, or practicing mindfulness, in short is a philosophy of living and a daily practice that comes from Buddhism. Mindfulness is the practice of staying present in the moment-to-moment of your life. Many of us spend every moment of our day thinking about the past or planning the future.

When we race through the day, we miss the precious moments of life or we are often too anxious to be present with the people in our life. The practice teaches one how to slow down, reign in the mind and focus on what is happening right now. I practice mindfulness in my own life and, if it’s a good fit and they find it useful, I teach techniques to my clients.

I am available for teaching mindfulness practices to small or large groups.
